Inspect the source behind the extension

MP4 is a container, while MPEG names a family of media standards and technologies. A filename alone does not tell you every decoder requirement. Identify the video stream, its codec, its dimensions, and its timing before promising compatibility. A file may also include audio or several visual streams, so decide which stream supplies the images your application expects.

An encoded packet is different from a decoded frame. Some pictures rely on surrounding coded information, which affects seeking and extraction. Requesting an arbitrary moment can therefore require decoding from an earlier access point. A keyframe-only preview can be useful, but it should not be presented as equivalent to exact timestamp selection.

Define timing and sampling

Choose whether a timestamp request means the nearest image, the first image at or after the requested time, or the image displayed at that instant. Preserve both the requested and actual source times. Use presentation timestamps when elapsed time matters, especially for variable-rate material. Frame numbers and average frame rate are not a complete replacement for source timing.

• Use uniform intervals for predictable storyboard coverage.
• Use explicit timestamps for editor-selected moments.
• Consider scene changes when visual variety matters.
• Inspect short intervals more densely when a brief event could be missed.

Frame selection and frame-rate conversion have different purposes. The FFmpeg filters reference documents selection filters and constant-rate conversion that may duplicate or drop frames. Preserve the relationship between each output image and its original moment rather than relying on a newly assigned image sequence number.

Deliver useful results

Specify aspect-ratio handling, orientation, output dimensions, and format. A square crop and a full-image fit are different products. For a batch, return or retain a manifest with source identity, actual timestamps, transformations, and output filenames. That record makes it possible to review an unexpected thumbnail and reproduce its selection without guessing hidden defaults.
